Most waterproof connector manufacturers will answer all nine in one email if they run their own plant. The ones who cannot tend to go quiet around check four, usually after you have paid for samples. What follows is the paperwork worth asking for early: molding ownership, batch test records, a UL file number, plating reports, temperature-rise data, tooling terms. No supplier is ranked here.

Table of Contents

Waterproof Connector Manufacturers: 9 Checks Before You Send an RFQ

Why Documents and Not a Ranking

The Nine Checks in One Table

The Three Checks Anyone Can Pass

What Waterproof Connector Manufacturers Do Not Publish

The Six Checks That Need a Document

Check 1: Who Owns the Molding Machine

Check 2: Batch Testing Records for the IP Rating

Check 3: The UL File Number Covers the Part, Not the Company

Check 4: Plating Thickness Has a Shipping Record

Check 5: Temperature-Rise Data Behind the Current Rating

Check 6: Tooling Ownership After the Project

The Document Set to Request

What to Put in the RFQ

Sources

Why Documents and Not a Ranking

A ranking measures who spent the most on marketing this quarter. A document tells you whether the part arriving next month matches the sample you approved.

The test has one shape. You ask a question, and the answer is either a file with a number on it or a sentence without one. Sentences are cheap. Test records cost money to produce and can be traced to a laboratory, a certificate body, or a date.

Silence is not proof. A supplier who did not send a file has not failed the check, and treating a slow reply as a verdict rejects good plants. Ask twice in writing before you treat a missing file as a failed one.

The Nine Checks in One Table

#

Check

Document to request

Answer that holds up

Answer that does not

1

Molding ownership

Machine list with tonnage and cavity count

Tonnage, cavities, clamp force stated per model

“We work with a partner factory”

2

IP rating testing

Batch test record with date and lot number

Water-pressure or immersion log tied to your lot

A certificate image with no lot reference

3

UL coverage

UL file number for the part number

File number that resolves to your part in UL Product iQ

“We are a UL certified company”

4

Plating thickness

Shipping inspection report

Measured thickness in µm or µin, per lot

“Silver plated” with no value

5

Current rating basis

Temperature-rise test data

Curve or table with ambient, load, and rise

A number on a nameplate

6

Tooling ownership

Tooling clause in the contract

Ownership and transfer terms written in

“The mold stays with us”

7

Sample source

Sample traceability note

Sample drawn from a production lot

Sample built by hand in the lab

8

On-time delivery

Last 12 months on-time figure

A percentage with a stated basis

“Delivery is never a problem”

9

Complaint handling

8D report template

A completed 8D from a real case

“We handle complaints quickly”

Print the table and work down it. Six rows need a file. Three need a sentence, and those three are the rows almost every supplier clears.

The Three Checks Anyone Can Pass

A website, a business license, and a free sample prove nothing about manufacturing. Any trading company clears all three inside a week. Keep them on the list anyway, because a supplier who fails one of them is not worth the next question.

The sample row deserves a second question. Ask which production lot the sample came from. A plant pulls it off the line and reads the lot number off the box. A trading company buys it from stock, and the answer comes back vague or as a photo of a datasheet instead of a photo of the part. Same part number, same drawing, different assembly depending on which line built it.

What Waterproof Connector Manufacturers Do Not Publish

Most waterproof connector manufacturers list a current rating, an IP rating, and a certificate logo. None of the three is a document. The first two summarize tests nobody has seen. The third describes a company, while you are buying a part number.

That gap is where the six remaining checks live. Each one asks for the test behind the number, or the ownership behind the tooling.

The Six Checks That Need a Document

Check 1: Who Owns the Molding Machine

Ask for the machine list: tonnage, cavity count, and which models run on which press. A real list names clamp force in tons and the number of cavities in each mold, because that pair sets cycle time and unit cost.

Then ask which press your part would run on. A 1-cavity tool and an 8-cavity tool of the same body behave differently in production. An answer that never mentions a press usually means the quote was built from a price list rather than a production plan.

Check 2: Batch Testing Records for the IP Rating

An IP68 claim without a lot number is brochure text. The IP code defines what the two digits mean and says nothing about whether the parts in your carton were tested. Request the record covering the lot shipped to you and read three fields: date, test method, sample size.

Sample size is the field buyers skip. A type test on three pieces and a batch check on thirty both produce a document, and only one of them describes your carton. Ask which of the two the record represents, then ask what happens to a lot that fails.

Check 3: The UL File Number Covers the Part, Not the Company

A UL file number identifies a product and a construction, not a company’s general competence. Ask for the number that lists your part, then look it up yourself in UL Product iQ. Two minutes of your own searching settles a question that a logo cannot.

Two failures are common here, and neither appears on a spec sheet. The file exists but covers a different part in the same family. Or the file is current while the supplier’s drawing has drifted away from the construction UL tested. If the supplier cannot state the number, ask which part the listing names and log the blank as an open item.

Check 4: Plating Thickness Has a Shipping Record

Plating decides how a contact behaves after two years outdoors, and “silver plated” is not a thickness. Ask for the shipping inspection report and read the plating row: a measured value in µm or µin, per lot.

If that value appears only on the drawing, you are holding a specification rather than a result. The difference shows up when two suppliers quote the same part at different prices, because plating is one of the places that gap sits. A plant that measures per lot can show you the spread. One that does not measure cannot tell you what it shipped. The lot-by-lot habit behind that report is the same one our waterproof connector quality control runs on.

Check 5: Temperature-Rise Data Behind the Current Rating

Every current rating is the outcome of a temperature-rise test, and the test carries conditions: ambient, load duration, cable size, mounting. Ask for the curve, then read the conditions before the amperes.

This is the check that most often comes back empty. Plenty of catalogs publish 150 A with no rise data behind the figure. Ask what ambient temperature the rating assumes before you compare two parts. A rating established at 20 °C and one established at 40 °C describe different hardware, and an enclosure that runs hot needs the second. Without the data, the number is a marketing figure and the part needs its own test before it enters a design.

Check 6: Tooling Ownership After the Project

OEM and custom programs end, and that is when the tooling question arrives. Ask whether the clause is in the contract, who owns the mold, and what happens if you move production.

A plant that paid for its own tools usually writes ownership into the agreement. A supplier that outsources the mold often cannot transfer it, because the mold belongs to the shop that cut it. A clear no can still be negotiated before the first order. Silence cannot be negotiated at all.

The Document Set to Request

Six documents cover the nine checks, and none of them requires a customer name or a price. Send the request as one email rather than six, because the reply pattern tells you as much as the files do.

Document

What you read on it

Where it can be verified

Machine and mold list

Tonnage, cavities, model-to-press mapping

Site visit or video walk-through

Batch IP test record

Date, method, sample size, lot number

Laboratory name and report number

UL file number

Part number as listed

UL Product iQ lookup

Plating inspection report

Measured thickness per lot

Internal QC record, auditable on site

Temperature-rise data

Ambient, load, rise, cable size

Test report with conditions

Tooling clause

Ownership and transfer terms

Contract text, not a verbal answer

Three of the six are the kind of file that can be published openly. All six are routine in a plant that cuts its own molds, which is why a refusal says something.

What to Put in the RFQ

Put the answers inside the RFQ, not in a separate questionnaire sent afterwards. A supplier who sees the checks before quoting prices the work differently, and the ones who cannot answer tend to drop out before negotiation starts.

Name the part number and the drawing revision. State the ambient temperature the part will see in service, and the lot size. Ask for the batch record with the first shipment rather than after the first failure. Put the file number in the quote. If the program needs a new housing, settle tooling inside the custom waterproof connector scope before pricing, not after the first shipment.

Keep the replies. Two years from now, when a joint runs hot or a lot fails incoming inspection, the file you assembled at the RFQ stage decides whether the answer takes 48 hours or a month. The waterproof connector manufacturers who answer all six requests in that first email are the ones worth a sample order.

Sources

UL Product iQ, the public certification lookup, used here as the verification route for file numbers and listed part numbers.
