Ask an application questionA typical stage lighting system uses locking power connectors for AC distribution, 5-pin XLR connectors for DMX control, RJ45-based interfaces for Art-Net or sACN networks, and rack panels or cable glands for secure equipment termination. The correct choice depends on electrical load, signal type, mounting method, environmental exposure and the required mating frequency.
DMX512 commonly uses 5-pin XLR for accessible control connections. Many fixtures also use 3-pin XLR, especially in touring and rental systems, but the connector format alone does not confirm the cable is suitable for DMX. Confirm the fixture requirements, pinout, cable specification and correct termination before installation.
Microphone cable may appear to work on short DMX runs, but it is not designed for the same data-transmission requirements and can cause unreliable control over longer runs or in electrically noisy environments. Use cable specified for DMX or digital control and install the correct terminator at the end of the data link.
Ethernet-based control such as Art-Net or sACN is usually selected when a system needs more universes, more fixtures, longer distribution distances or a star-network topology. DMX remains a practical solution for simpler fixture chains. The decision should consider system scale, network ownership, redundancy and the type of control equipment in use.
Not necessarily. Many IP ratings apply only when a connector pair is correctly assembled and fully mated. Unmated receptacles may require compatible protective caps. For outdoor systems, verify the rating for the connector, panel cutout, gasket, cable entry and rear enclosure as one complete environmental boundary.
They can only share one interface when the connector, cable assembly and equipment are specifically engineered and rated for the combined service. The design must account for insulation, pin assignment, interference control, safety requirements and applicable local electrical regulations. Do not combine separate power and data paths through an unapproved connector assembly.
Select a panel format that matches the connector cutout, port count, cable bend radius and service access requirements. Use correctly sized fasteners, gaskets and cable-entry protection where required.
