Why an LED Surge Protective Device Matters

LED drivers use switching power supplies with sensitive semiconductor components. Magnetic ballasts could absorb a lot of abuse; drivers cannot. A surge above the driver input rating can damage MOSFETs or control electronics, while repeated lower-level transients can gradually reduce driver life. This is why surge immunity is an important consideration in outdoor LED lighting systems.

Outdoor luminaires can be exposed to surges caused by nearby lightning activity as well as switching events on the electrical grid. These events appear as short-duration overvoltage transients. A properly selected surge protective device limits the voltage reaching downstream equipment and diverts surge current away from sensitive LED driver components.

Fail-Safe Status Indication: Selected PVLinkTech LED surge protection devices integrate thermal disconnection protection and a visible failure indicator, making it easier to identify when the protective element has reached the end of its service life instead of leaving the luminaire unknowingly unprotected.

Surge protective devices are selected according to their installation location and the level of protection required. IEC 61643-series standards cover low-voltage surge protective devices, while broader surge protection practices commonly use coordinated protection at the service entrance, distribution level, and equipment level. A luminaire-mounted SPD provides localized protection close to the LED driver and can complement upstream surge protection installed elsewhere in the electrical system.

Standard Protection 10kV Tier
10 kV / 5 kA

Suitable for applications requiring a 10kV surge protection level, with discharge-current capability selected according to the specific SPD model and system requirements.

The required surge protection level depends on the installation environment, local lightning exposure, electrical distribution system, grounding conditions, LED driver withstand capability, and the protection already installed upstream. A 20kV solution provides greater surge-protection margin than a 10kV solution, but the appropriate SPD should always be selected according to the actual luminaire and system requirements.

LED Surge Protective Device Range

The range is built around three mounting layouts: in-line for luminaire installation, distribution box protection, and linear lighting boards. Every layout has a 10kV and a 20kV version.

10kV or 20kV SPD: Which Rating Protects Your LED Driver?

Both ratings protect the LED driver the same way: they clamp overvoltage transients before they reach the driver input. The real difference is how much surge energy each version can absorb. Our 10kV-rated LED surge protective device is rated Uoc 10kV, In 5kA (8/20 µs), Imax 10kA. The 20kV version doubles that capacity to Uoc 20kV, In 10kA, Imax 20kA. Both work on 277VAC / 320V class systems, so the selection is determined by exposure at the installation site rather than system operating voltage.

Where to Use an LED Surge Protective Device

The same product family covers the full range of outdoor lighting, because the wiring schemes differ more than the protection level.

Street and roadway LED lighting protected by surge protective devices

Street and Roadway Lighting

Open roads expose luminaires to the longest lightning paths and the fewest nearby structures to absorb strikes. Use the 20kV rating, and mount the SPD inside the luminaire or at the pole hand hole.

Parking lot tunnel and perimeter LED lighting surge protection

Parking Lots, Tunnels & Perimeters

These are partially shielded locations. The 10kV version matches the Enhanced exposure class and keeps project cost down without underprotecting the driver.

High mast stadium and airport LED lighting surge protection

High-Mast, Stadium & Airport

These are the highest-exposure fixtures on any site, tall and fully exposed. Take the 20kV rating and verify the wiring with the datasheet before installation.

Architectural LED linear lighting surge protective device application

LED Linear Lighting

M998 is built for linear boards used in architectural and signage lighting, with a shorter body and factory-fitted leads that match the tighter wiring space.

Distribution box surge protection for multiple LED luminaires

Distribution Box Protection

When one box feeds a group of luminaires, GSPD3 protects the whole branch. It carries the same 10kV or 20kV ratings as the in-line series in a panel-friendly body.

LED lighting retrofit project with inline surge protective device

Retrofit Projects

Installs between the mains and the driver without reworking the luminaire housing. The in-line series (GSPD1, GSPD4, GSPD5, M997, M999) covers this; GSPD1 is fastest with pre-terminated leads.

Series or Parallel Installation: Which Wiring Do You Need?

Every LED surge protective device (SPD) in this range ships with an engineering datasheet illustrating the exact wiring schematics for both series and parallel configurations. Select the right method based on your luminaire architecture.

Continuous Power

Parallel Connection

In a parallel connection, the SPD sits across the supply lines (L, N, and PE) at the LED driver input. It shunts transient voltage surges harmlessly to ground while normal operating power continues without interruption to the driver.

  • Connected across Phase, Neutral & Earth (L, N, PE)
  • Maintains active lighting even after SPD end-of-life
Fail-Safe Cutoff

Series Connection

In a series connection, the SPD is wired directly into the active power path leading to the luminaire. When an extreme surge event occurs, it physically cuts off the power circuit to prevent destructive overload to downstream LED modules.

  • In-line power circuit path to driver & luminaire
  • Immediate visual indication when replacement is required

How to Choose the Right LED Surge Protective Device

Match the SPD to the installation, not to the driver price. Work through three fundamental questions:

Where is the light installed?

Exposure Evaluation

Evaluate physical exposure to transient surges and regional lightning density before selecting the surge capacity:

High Exposure Zones 20kV Rating

Open highways, bridges, high-mast installations, and regions with frequent thunderstorms.

Standard & Sheltered 10kV Version

Parking garages, transit tunnels, sheltered canopies, and dense urban streets.

Where does the SPD mount?

Mounting Interface

Identify the installation point to select the correct mechanical enclosure and wiring series:

GSPD1 GSPD4 GSPD5 M997 M999
Distribution Box (Feeds multiple luminaires)
GSPD3
LED Linear Lighting Boards
M998 (Direct Fit)

System Voltage

All versions accept 277VAC systems with a 320V maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV). The M999 TUV version is rated at 277V.

System 277VAC

M999 TUV 277V
Pre-Order Verification: Always confirm driver input voltage specifications and line tolerance prior to final procurement.

Buying Checklist for LED Surge Protective Devices

Five mistakes cause most failed orders — and how to avoid them in your project specifications.

  1. Mistake #1

Treating the kV number as a system voltage

Uoc 10kV or 20kV is the open-circuit withstand rating of the SPD, not the supply voltage. The actual supply rating is Uc 320V for this range. Ensure your electrical engineers do not confuse nominal line input with test surge impulse capacity.

  2. Mistake #2

    Undersizing the discharge current

In is the nominal discharge current the SPD can handle repeatedly; Imax is the maximum discharge current rating. A 5kA / 10kA unit and a 10kA / 20kA unit may look nearly identical in the enclosure, but they represent different protection capabilities and application requirements.

  3. Mistake #3

Ignoring lead length in the luminaire housing

Long connection leads add lead inductance and can reduce the surge clamping effectiveness at the LED driver. Keep SPD leads as short as practical and follow the wiring diagram on the technical datasheet. Our engineering datasheets provide connection schemes for both series and parallel installation.

  4. Mistake #4

Ordering based on unit price alone

Internal components, MOV quality, thermal protection design, and manufacturing consistency all influence long-term surge protection performance. We apply component inspection and batch-level electrical testing before shipment. See our quality control process for more information about our inspection and testing procedures. A replaceable SPD can also help simplify maintenance compared with replacing an entire LED luminaire.

  5. Mistake #5

Forgetting spare provisioning for field maintenance

Lightning and surge exposure varies significantly by site. For large outdoor lighting networks, maintaining spare SPDs can help field teams replace units during scheduled maintenance. Protection ratings such as 10kV and 20kV should be selected according to the luminaire design, installation environment, applicable standards, and project requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1.What is the difference between a 10kV and 20kV LED surge protective device?
The 10kV version has Uoc 10kV, In 5kA and Imax 10kA. The 20kV version doubles the surge handling to Uoc 20kV, In 10kA and Imax 20kA. Both run on 277VAC / 320V systems and carry the same IP67 rating and certifications. Choose by exposure: 10kV for parking lots, tunnels and sheltered sites; 20kV for open roadways, stadiums, airports and lightning-prone regions.
Q2.What does Uoc 10kV mean on an LED SPD?
Uoc is the open-circuit voltage the SPD can withstand without failing. It is a surge immunity rating, not the operating voltage. The operating limit is Uc, which is 320V for this range.
Q3.Which rating do I need for LED street lights, 10kV or 20kV?
For typical street roadway lighting, use the 20kV version, which matches the Extreme exposure level in ANSI C136.2. This is the level recommended for street roadways, stadiums and airports in the standard. For parking lots and tunnels, the 10kV version at the Enhanced level is usually sufficient. When a project specification quotes an exposure class, pick the version that meets or exceeds it.
Q4.Can this LED surge protective device work with any LED driver?
It protects the driver input on 277VAC / 320V class systems. Confirm your driver input voltage and the luminaire wiring before ordering. If you are unsure, send us the driver datasheet and we will check compatibility before you commit.
Q5.What certifications does this LED surge protective device carry?
The range is certified TUV, CE, ETL, CQC, UKCA and RoHS, covering Europe, North America, China and the UK. See our certificates page for details.
Q6.Do you support OEM and custom versions?
Yes. We supply standard models from stock and custom versions with different lead lengths, wire types and markings. Discuss the requirement with our OEM team.
